Sugaring is one of the oldest methods of hair removal, dating to ancient Egypt and the Middle East. The paste is made from three simple ingredients — sugar, lemon, and water — with no resins, no synthetic waxes, and nothing applied hot. Because the formula is so minimal, it tends to suit sensitive skin that reacts to traditional wax.
A licensed esthetician warms the paste to body temperature and applies it against the direction of hair growth, working it into the follicle. It is then removed with a quick flick in the same direction the hair grows. Removing hair with the grain — rather than against it, as waxing does — means hair is less likely to snap at the surface, which can reduce breakage and ingrown hairs.
During a session, your esthetician cleanses the area, then applies and removes the paste in sections. Most clients describe the sensation as a brief pull, more comfortable than waxing. Hair should be at least a quarter-inch long — roughly two weeks of growth — for the paste to grip. Sessions run from about 10 minutes for the upper lip to around 50 minutes for an upper leg with bikini line.
Results generally last three to four weeks, depending on your individual hair cycle. Mild redness or sensitivity for a few hours afterward is normal. There is no extended downtime, though the area stays temporarily more sensitive to heat, friction, and sun.
Sugaring suits most skin types and is a strong option for sensitive skin. It is not appropriate during isotretinoin treatment or for at least six months afterward, as skin heals more slowly and can tear. Recent retinoid use, sunburn, active infection, or broken skin also rule out treatment until the skin recovers.
