Skin concern

Hyperpigmentation

Even tone, the gentle way.

About this concern

What's actually happening

Hyperpigmentation is patches of skin that produce extra melanin. The common types are sun spots, post-inflammatory marks (left behind after acne or injury), and melasma — which is often hormonal and easily triggered or worsened by sun and heat.

The cause matters: melasma in particular is stubborn and can be made worse by harsh treatments, so gentle and consistent always wins. At Andersen Esthetics, we take a gentle, gradual approach to uneven tone — especially important for deeper skin tones, where aggressive treatments can backfire and create more pigment.

The Andersen approach

Our brightening facials are gentle and tone-focused. Depending on your skin, we may suggest:

  • MandeliClear Peel — a mandelic-acid peel that's gentle and well-suited to a range of skin tones.
  • Vitamin A Accelerator — supports smoother, brighter-looking, more even tone.
  • Lactic Acid Peel — gentle resurfacing with added hydration.
  • Refine Facial — a gentle glow-building treatment.

We go topical-first and gentle-first, and we patch-test — the safest path to brighter-looking skin, particularly in deeper skin tones.

At-home essentials

  • Wear and reapply broad-spectrum SPF every day — this is the number-one step, and nothing else works without it.
  • Use gentle brighteners like vitamin C, azelaic acid, niacinamide, or an over-the-counter retinoid.
  • Don't pick at spots or blemishes, which creates new marks.
  • Choose gentle products and stop anything that stings or burns.
